Lets talk about Harley-Davidson® Air Filters today. Here is some great technical info from Harley-Davidson®.

Did you know that “air” is one of the essential elements needed to create the power that drives your motorcycle engine. Almost every common performance modification, such as increasing stroke and bore, porting heads, or even changing cams all have one goal in common – to increase how much air can be pulled into a cylinder before the spark plug ignites it. So knowing this you can say… more air equals more power.

Improving the flow of air into an engine is one of the most uncomplicated, cost-effective  and adequate ways to acquire a gain in performance.

How do you do this? With Screamin’ Eagle® high-flow air cleaner kits. They are available for most Harley-Davidson® motorcycles.

  • Screamin’ Eagle® air cleaner kits reduce the power-robbing restrictions of intake airflow by optimizing the air filter media type and eliminating restrictions in the flow path of intake air into the inlet of the throttle-body. These products are well-designed and tested air cleaner systems, which move more air and withstand many miles of hard use.
  • All Screamin’ Eagle® air cleaner kits are designed and tested specifically for Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Rigorous testing includes airflow testing to measure the flow capacity of the element and each component to minimize resistance; Dyno testing and calibration to ensure the product is functioning the way we want it to; emissions and noise compliance testing to meet current standards; and finally, durability testing, which simulates thousands of the hardest miles a bike will ever see to make sure the air cleaners withstand the challenge.

AIR FILTER MATERIALS
  • An essential part of the air cleaner kit is the air filter. In a high-performance engine, the air filter needs to allow an almost unrestricted flow of air into the motor, while at the same time removing the smallest dirt particles from the air. Harley-Davidson® air filter materials fall under three categories.

  • Cellulose filters (original equipment), which are paper products,do a good job of blocking dirt particles from entering the motor. However, in order to trap the dirt they are constructed with very small openings. As a result, they don’t allow the substantial airflow required by high-performance engines

  • Cotton filters (red filters) are better for high-performance engines that need greater airflow because they have larger spaces that allow more air to pass through, however, in order to work effectively, cotton filters must be oiled before use. The stickiness of the oil traps the dirt particles in the filter

  • Synthetic media is used in Screamin’ Eagle® high-tech fiberglass filters (white filters). These filters offer the best combination of performance and convenience. Synthetic media utilizes a dry element that is washable and doesn’t require oiling. Synthetic and cotton media have very similar flow rates
  •
  • The graph below shows how flow rates compare on select Harley-Davidson® air filters. Metered air is pulled through the filter to create a vacuum (e.g., an engine sucking air through the filter), while the flow rate of air through the filter is measured in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM). This is measured at different vacuum
pressures, which simulate the varying levels of air the engine requires. The Screamin’ Eagle® filters are so free-flowing that the equipment cannot generate more than 20 inches of water vacuum, meaning the restriction of flow is far less than with the paper filters.

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE® AIR CLEANER KIT OPTIONS
A wide selection of Screamin' Eagle® air cleaner kits is available so there is something for everyone. For those who prefer to hide performance modifications with the Original Equipment air cleaner cover, the Stage I Air Cleaner Kits fit the bill. Others may wish to
showcase their power improvements and add to the aggressive look of their motorcycle by going with the Heavy Breather or Extreme lines of air cleaner kits. Whatever you desire, there is an amazing selection of proven performers.
All Screamin’ Eagle® air cleaners listed below are 50-state compliant when installed properly per the fitment listed in the 2014 Genuine Motor Parts and Accessories catalog.
Note: All EFI-equipped models require ECM calibration, which is priced separately.
All other trademarks are the property of their respective owners. October 2013.

More air equals more power The Stage I Air Cleaner, which can enhance power up to 10 percent, is a simple first step in upgrading a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle All Screamin’ Eagle® filter elements are washable and provide years of continuous use

Air filters become more restricted as they are loaded with dirt particles. In order to breathe, both cotton and synthetic Screamin’ Eagle® air filters must be kept clean. Your air filter should be inspected every 5,000 miles or more frequently under dusty conditions. Just shine a light through the filter to see if it needs cleaning.

We recommend K&N Power Kleen Air Filter Cleaner, or if you are cleaning a cotton filter, we suggest K&N Air Filter Oil so you can oil the filter after cleaning.
