Lets talk about Harley-Davidson® Air Filters today. Here is some great technical info from Harley-Davidson®.

Did you know that “air” is one of the essential elements needed to create the power that drives your motorcycle engine. Almost every common performance modification, such as increasing stroke and bore, porting heads, or even changing cams all have one goal in common – to increase how much air can be pulled into a cylinder before the spark plug ignites it. So knowing this you can say… more air equals more power.

Improving the flow of air into an engine is one of the most uncomplicated, cost-effective  and adequate ways to acquire a gain in performance.

How do you do this? With Screamin’ Eagle® high-flow air cleaner kits. They are available for most Harley-Davidson® motorcycles.

  • Screamin’ Eagle® air cleaner kits reduce the power-robbing restrictions of intake airflow by optimizing the air filter media type and eliminating restrictions in the flow path of intake air into the inlet of the throttle-body. These products are well-designed and tested air cleaner systems, which move more air and withstand many miles of hard use.
  • All Screamin’ Eagle® air cleaner kits are designed and tested specifically for Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Rigorous testing includes airflow testing to measure the flow capacity of the element and each component to minimize resistance; Dyno testing and calibration to ensure the product is functioning the way we want it to; emissions and noise compliance testing to meet current standards; and finally, durability testing, which simulates thousands of the hardest miles a bike will ever see to make sure the air cleaners withstand the challenge.

AIR FILTER MATERIALS
  • An essential part of the air cleaner kit is the air filter. In a high-performance engine, the air filter needs to allow an almost unrestricted flow of air into the motor, while at the same time removing the smallest dirt particles from the air. Harley-Davidson® air filter materials fall under three categories.

  • Cellulose filters (original equipment), which are paper products,do a good job of blocking dirt particles from entering the motor. However, in order to trap the dirt they are constructed with very small openings. As a result, they don’t allow the substantial airflow required by high-performance engines

  • Cotton filters (red filters) are better for high-performance engines that need greater airflow because they have larger spaces that allow more air to pass through, however, in order to work effectively, cotton filters must be oiled before use. The stickiness of the oil traps the dirt particles in the filter

  • Synthetic media is used in Screamin’ Eagle® high-tech fiberglass filters (white filters). These filters offer the best combination of performance and convenience. Synthetic media utilizes a dry element that is washable and doesn’t require oiling. Synthetic and cotton media have very similar flow rates
  •
  • The graph below shows how flow rates compare on select Harley-Davidson® air filters. Metered air is pulled through the filter to create a vacuum (e.g., an engine sucking air through the filter), while the flow rate of air through the filter is measured in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM). This is measured at different vacuum
pressures, which simulate the varying levels of air the engine requires. The Screamin’ Eagle® filters are so free-flowing that the equipment cannot generate more than 20 inches of water vacuum, meaning the restriction of flow is far less than with the paper filters.

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE® AIR CLEANER KIT OPTIONS
A wide selection of Screamin' Eagle® air cleaner kits is available so there is something for everyone. For those who prefer to hide performance modifications with the Original Equipment air cleaner cover, the Stage I Air Cleaner Kits fit the bill. Others may wish to
showcase their power improvements and add to the aggressive look of their motorcycle by going with the Heavy Breather or Extreme lines of air cleaner kits. Whatever you desire, there is an amazing selection of proven performers.
All Screamin’ Eagle® air cleaners listed below are 50-state compliant when installed properly per the fitment listed in the 2014 Genuine Motor Parts and Accessories catalog.
Note: All EFI-equipped models require ECM calibration, which is priced separately.
All other trademarks are the property of their respective owners. October 2013.

More air equals more power The Stage I Air Cleaner, which can enhance power up to 10 percent, is a simple first step in upgrading a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle All Screamin’ Eagle® filter elements are washable and provide years of continuous use

http://www.adventureharley.com/harley-davidson-k-n-air-filter-oil-99882-88tTIP
Air filters become more restricted as they are loaded with dirt particles. In order to breathe, both cotton and synthetic Screamin’ Eagle® air filters must be kept clean. Your air filter should be inspected every 5,000 miles or more frequently under dusty conditions. Just shine a light through the filter to see if it needs cleaning.

http://www.adventureharley.com/harley-davidson-k-n-power-kleen-air-filter-cleaner-93600004
We recommend K&N Power Kleen Air Filter Cleaner, or if you are cleaning a cotton filter, we suggest K&N Air Filter Oil so you can oil the filter after cleaning.

Tips on how to Winterize Your Bike & Some New Harley-Davidson® Items!

The Holiday Season is here! This weekend we are having our Black Friday Event on www.adventureharley.com. If you did not take advantage of our winter storage program you may like these tips offered by Harley-Davidson® about:
 "How To Winterize Your Bike".
If you prefer to prep and store your own motorcycle for the winter season. Then here are some necessary steps to help you properly winterize and store your Harley-Davidson® motorcycles for the cold winter months ahead. By following these steps you can help insure that you motorcycle will be in prime operating condition when the time comes to hit the road in the spring.

BASIC DETAILS YOU NEED TO KNOW
So, if you are technically inclined, have no problems working with a wrench, have the right tools and a dry, indoor storage area and want to take the responsibility of winterizing your own motorcycle then here are the essential steps.

1. Have the right tools and supplies to do the job. Having the proper tools and products to winterize a motorcycle is necessary. Taking short cuts now can be very costly next spring. (IF you do need any tools check out www.adventureharley.com)

http://www.adventureharley.com/harley-davidson-ethanol-guard-fuel-stabilizer-4-ounce-91600001
2. Fill gas tank with premium-grade gasoline, adding the appropriate amount of fuel stabilizer for the tank’s capacity. Filling the tank helps prevent rust and corrosion-causing moisture from forming inside. Adding Ethanol Guard Fuel Stabilizer, P/N 91600001, keeps fuel fresh for 12 months. Blended with corrosion inhibitors, this premium Fuel Stabilizer is formulated to protect fuel tanks, fuel lines, carburetors and injectors from long-term exposure to the adverse effects of ethanol-blended fuel. It fights deposits and acts as a demulsifier to eliminate condensation in the fuel system. Run the motorcycle for a few minutes to ensure a good mix of stabilizer and fuel.

3. Change engine oil and filter, as well as the transmission

http://www.adventureharley.com/harley-davidson-oil-change-accessory-kit-14900058
and primary fluids while the engine is still warm. The complete Oil Change Accessory Kit, P/N 14900058, has all the essentials needed to equip a garage for a weekend oil change, including: Low Profile Oil Drain Pan, Oil Absorbent Work Station Mat, End Cap Oil Filter Wrench and a Transmission/Crankcase Filler Funnel. With the right tools, you can efficiently change motorcycle fluids while reducing the mess and cleanup time. The Cruiser Cradle Wheel Chock, P/N 92900001, will keep the bike upright while being worked on and permits easy access to both sides of the vehicle.

http://www.adventureharley.com/harley-lube-general-lubrication-oil

 4. Lubricate and adjust clutch and throttle cables. Follow the instructions and procedures as outlined in the owner’s or service manual. Harley ® Lube, P/N 94968-09, is perfect for lubricating clutch and throttle cables. The handy needle dispenser allows for precision application.

5. Make sure there are no oil leaks and that the stabilized fuel has circulated throughout the fuel system. Start and run the motorcycle. Keep it running long enough to ensure there are no oil leaks and that the stabilized fuel has circulated throughout the fuel system, and then turn off the motorcycle.

6. Thoroughly wash and clean the motorcycle. Cleaning bike surfaces of dirt, insect splatter and caked-on road grime will prevent damage to the finish over a storage
period. The Harley® Bike Wash Kit, P/N 93600056, includes all the essentials required to
thoroughly clean a motorcycle – Sunwash® Bike Soap, Bug Remover spray, Wash Mitt, Bug Eater Sponge, Synthetic Drying Chamois and a Microfiber Detailing Cloth.

http://www.adventureharley.com/harley-davidson-bike-wash-kit-93600056

7. Detail and wax the motorcycle. Detailing and waxing is an important step in protecting motorcycle surfaces over the cold winter months. The Harley ® Detail & Protect Kit, P/N 93600057A, has everything you need to protect painted and chrome-plated surfaces such as Glaze™ Poly Sealant, Gloss Detailer, Chrome Clean & Shine and a microfiber detailing cloth, soft cloths, and detailing swabs for applying the products.

8. Choose a clean, dry location in a garage or storage area that is out of direct sunlight. Stored motorcycles should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent UV rays from fading bike surfaces. They should not be stored near corrosive elements such as pool chemicals, fertilizer and salt, or near freezers, electric heaters or furnaces, which emit gasses that can deteriorate rubber components. The Cruiser Cradle Wheel Chock, P/N 92900001, will keep the bike upright for efficient storage.

www.adventureharley.com/supersmart-battery-tender-66000038

9. Properly store the battery. Disconnect, remove, check and clean the battery, then connect it to a battery tender to keep it operational over the long winter months of
inactivity. A product such as the 750mA Supersmart ® Battery Tender, P/N 66000038, plugs into a standard AC outlet and can stay connected throughout the entire storage period. It’s better than a trickle charger, because the “smart” feature turns itself on and off as needed, so the battery never overcharges. Other options include the 1.25 Amp Weather-Resistant Battery Charger, P/N 66000033, and the 5.0 Amp Weather-Resistant Battery Charger, P/N 66000041.

http://www.adventureharley.com/harley-davidson-5-amp-weather-resistant-battery-charger-66000041http://www.adventureharley.com/harley-davidson-1-25-amp-weather-resistant-battery-charger-66000033

10. Lock and secure the motorcycle. Keeping a motorcycle locked and secured while in storage provides you with peace of mind. Harley-Davidson® has an extensive line of security products to safeguard your investments, including cable, shackle and chain locks and kits for motorcycles along with locks for helmets, windshields, saddlebags and detachables.

11. Cover the motorcycle. A motorcycle should always be covered during storage. Be sure to use one of the Harley-Davidson® “breathable” indoor covers, such as the Premium Indoor Motorcycle Cover. These covers allow condensation and moisture to escape in order to prevent corrosion. Motorcycle cover fitments vary by model. Refer to the 2014 Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories catalog for appropriate part numbers. And, what about detachable accessories? The Detach Depot Wall Rack, P/N 93100005, provides versatile, secure, off-the-floor storage for detachable accessories – saving valuable shelf and
floor space.

http://www.adventureharley.com/detach-depot-wall-rack-93100005

12. Don’t start the motorcycle until it’s time to ride in the spring. The motorcycle has been properly winterized, so there is no need to start it up until the spring riding season.

Hope these tips were helpful to you. Here are some new items that arrived this week. Some are limited supply! They are all made by Stamper for Harley-Davidson® and are high quality pieces.
